LINER-NOTES / PIANO APHORISMS (2022)

MK

LINER NOTES / PIANO APHORISMS (2022)

There is a story about Claude Debussy, but I’m not sure if it’s true. After attending a recital of his own music, he was reported to have said, “Not bad, almost as if the music hadn’t been scored at all, but had simply been created on the spot.” This quote perfectly captures the gray area between composition and performance.

Take for example Des pas sur la neige, a piano piece from Debussy’s Préludes—a precisely composed miniature that nonetheless evokes spontaneity as it is being played and heard. I love this particular prélude very much and as you listen to the Piano Aphorisms, I hope you will hear the traces of its influence.

Explanations for these aphorisms are hard for me to find. But I do have a few fleeting memories of their genesis and maybe it’s useful to share them with you. During the summer things were scattered and confused. The approach of winter offered an opportunity to withdraw and occupy myself with a new idea that had been bubbling under the surface.

I visited an adventure supply shop and bought an air mattress and a sleeping bag. I then locked myself in my studio and decided not to leave this windowless, sparsely lit, hermetically sealed black cube for a while. I spent something like two or three months there. I would work until early in the morning, then sleep under the grand piano for a few hours. The next day I would examine the previous night’s results with fresh ears.

A piano is not a docile partner that merely does its duty. I believe an instrument is like a human being. It demands attention and it causes trouble. It gives and withdraws love. It secretly comes to its own conclusions. Its mood is mercurial, just like its tuning, brittle and steadfast at the same time. Its entire existence is permeated by the moment—always awaiting something new.

When a grand piano becomes a four-poster bed (because one has decided to lie under it to sleep), the aura of this creature changes. It’s not really supposed to be seen from this perspective—naked and exposed. The wood on the underside of the instrument is not lacquered or shiny. It has no golden engravings, no ornamentations. Like an unmasked skeleton. Like the unadorned, craggy, subterranean backstage corridors of a beautiful concert hall.

Lying on my back in a ground floor studio, I could feel the foundation touching the outer shell of our planet a few centimeters below me. Looking up, there was no starry sky, only the rough yet soothing frame of a silent titan. In these moments the Piano Aphorisms may have truly been born.

Writing and recording this music felt otherwordly. I don’t think I’m able to decipher it today. Four movements, with flowing transitions, a sonata in the broadest sense. Maybe in B Locrian, maybe in E Minor, hard to say. At any rate, an uninterrupted piece of 34 minutes in length that lives in the gray area between composition and performance. MK
